THE SHORT GUIDE
A number needs a definition.
Start with cash that is truly available.
Emergency savings are cash reserves set aside for an unplanned expense or financial shock. Do not count money already assigned to another near-term need.
Count the spending that continues.
Use a conservative monthly picture: housing, food, utilities, insurance, transport, and commitments you would still need to meet.
Be careful with income assumptions.
Include income only when it is reasonably expected to continue. A smaller, honest number is more useful than an optimistic one.
SOURCES & METHOD
The formula is deliberately plain.
We estimate the monthly amount your reserve must fund, then divide the emergency savings by that gap.
estimated runway = emergency savings ÷ monthly funding gap
If the monthly funding gap is zero or below, the page reports that the reserve is not being depleted under the stated assumptions rather than implying an unlimited result. This tool does not forecast job loss, benefits, debt payments, taxes, inflation, market changes, or a future emergency. It is educational information—not personal financial advice.
